What should you actually look for on a supplement label? A Plain-English guide

What should you actually look for on a supplement label? A Plain-English guide

The problem with most supplement labels? Most of the people reading them don’t have science degrees.

The problem with most supplement labels? Most of the people reading them don’t have science degrees.

Labels come loaded with long ingredient lists, complex names, and bold claims – but very little clarity on what actually matters.

Here’s some tips on what to look out for.

Look beyond the front of the pack

The front label is marketing. The back label is reality.

A product might say “high strength” or “advanced formula” but none of that tells you:

  • How much of each ingredient is actually included
  • Whether doses are meaningful or token
  • Whether the formula is balanced or just a sprinkle of trends

Check for transparent dosing (not hidden blends)

One of the biggest red flags is “proprietary blends”, where ingredients are grouped together without clear dosing.

Instead of showing individual amounts, you might see a combined “performance complex” with no breakdown of what’s actually in there. That makes it impossible to know what you’re actually getting.

A high-quality supplement should disclose the amount of every active ingredient—so you know exactly what you’re taking and why.

Look for clinically relevant ingredients

Not all ingredients are created equal.

Strong formulations focus on compounds with meaningful research behind them, such as:

  • NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) for cellular NAD+ support
  • PQQ for mitochondrial function
  • Spermidine for cellular renewal pathways
  • Active B vitamins for energy metabolism
  • Vitamin D3 + K2 for bone and metabolic health
  • Magnesium for neuromuscular function and recovery

Be wary of doses: the key is not what’s included, but how much of it you’re getting.

Pay attention to the “stack philosophy”

A well-designed supplement isn’t just a list of good ingredients thrown together. It should behave like a system.

That means something like the below:

  • Cellular Power & Mitochondrial Health (e.g. NMN, PQQ, niacinamide)
  • Performance & Recovery (B vitamins, magnesium, betaine)
  • Brain, Mood & Stress Resilience (adaptogens, antioxidants like Rhodiola and Niacinamide)
  • Antioxidant, Vascular & Metabolic Function (S7, SalidroPure, L-Ergothioneine)
  • Gut, Microbiome & Immunity (postbiotics and microbiome-targeted compounds)
  • Joint & Connective Tissue (Vitamin D3, K2 MK-7, calcium, magnesium)
  • Hydration and electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium balance)

If a label feels random, it usually is.

If it feels integrated, it’s likely been designed that way – with a biological system in mind.

Check out third-party testing and transparency

A serious supplement brand should be able to show:

  • Ingredient sourcing standards
  • Batch testing or third-party verification
  • Clear labelling without hidden blends
  • Full disclosure of active compounds and dosages

If this information is hard to find, that’s usually a red flag.

The difference of clarity

When it comes to ingredients, NORTH has nothing to hide.

We are transparent about what goes into every NORTH formula. Every active ingredient is fully disclosed on the label, along with its amount per serving - never hidden inside a proprietary blend.

We use branded ingredients and independent quality testing and select ingredient amounts in reference to published research and established Daily Values where applicable.

NORTH Ultra is NSF Certified for Sport, which means every batch is independently tested and verified for banned substances, label accuracy and manufacturing quality. This is the most rigorous third-party certification in sports nutrition – required by the NFL, MLB, NHL and PGA. We are actively pursuing NSF Certified for Sport certification for NORTH Foundation.

The fine print

Supplement labels don’t need to be confusing.

Once you know what to look for – transparent dosing, relevant ingredients, overarching logic, and genuine third-party credentials – you can quickly separate meaningful formulas from marketing noise.

Because when it comes to your body, there shouldn’t be any guesswork.
